This is an unfortunate starting point for this blog. Well, perhaps it’s appropriate to use this show to make my point. Eating well on the road is exceedingly difficult. I enjoy the challenge and excitement of finding a new and hopefully interesting place to eat in every city, but it’s not always possible. I found no food worth mentioning near this beautiful theatre. Oh well. I did get to eat some lovely food in Manhattan. And arriving late the night before the show, we were lucky to find a pretty good Argentinian restaurant, La Fusta, right next door. Malbec and steak. What a combo.

A good venue in Pittsburgh for DIY bands: strong
coffee, vegan food and if you’re nice, they even
let you crash on their couches.
Editor’s note: The Decemberists actually played here on our first national tour. We got in trouble for making fun of Iron City beer (I stand by our dismal assessment) and slept on floors and couches and cots at the barista’s house. I don’t miss crashing on floors.

The Florida Avenue Grill for soul food. Food is great, and it’s been there for a long time. Lots of pictures of celebrities on the wall, and it has a great family run vibe.
Ben’s Chili Bowl has also been around a long time. Chili dogs, chili burgers, fries, and they are open late, so you can go after the show. They have a veggie burger, too, so you can bring your vegetarian light guy or violist with you.
Dukem for Ethiopian food. I haven’t been, but according to Thom, it’s the best, and they have live music.
