University of Buffalo

Buffalo was good to us. A musician friend gave us the tip on Amy’s Place on Main St. It’s a very unique, vegetarian friendly diner. It’s also very omnivore-friendly. Highly recommended. While not particularly close to the UB campus we played at, it was only a 20 minute bike ride. It happens to be quite close to a music store and a record shop. And for dinner, who could resist getting some hot wings. The runner went to Duff’s, and the wings were great. The super hot wings were great, as were mild and barbecue.

Vindigo in hand, I found a Korean supermarket with a food court upstairs. Had some pretty good spicy vegetable and beef soup. It was really spicy. Didn’t find much else, I think we had food delivered for dinner.

Spicy Soup

the Avalon in Boston, MA

My big discovery on this trip to Boston was the Lower Depths Tap Room on Commonwealth. A bunch of us went there after the show. John and I had the fantastic house burger. The fries were described by our LD as possibly “the perfect fry.” I disagreed only because they were seasoned, and in my opinion, the perfect fry would wear only salt. Anyway, great place for a pint and a burger. Not necessarily the place to have a quiet dinner. In that case, I’d opt for the Eastern Standard. They are slightly upscale, but have good Boston fare. Jenny had an amazing salad with sweet breads last time. She didn’t know what sweet breads were when she ordered it, though, and was very grossed out.

This is an unfortunate starting point for this blog. Well, perhaps it’s appropriate to use this show to make my point. Eating well on the road is exceedingly difficult. I enjoy the challenge and excitement of finding a new and hopefully interesting place to eat in every city, but it’s not always possible. I found no food worth mentioning near this beautiful theatre. Oh well. I did get to eat some lovely food in Manhattan. And arriving late the night before the show, we were lucky to find a pretty good Argentinian restaurant, La Fusta, right next door. Malbec and steak. What a combo.
